Stay on your game: 5 Ways to increase Productivity

If you run your own show you will understand the double edge sword that is having no one but yourself to answer to. We have a very tumultuous relationship with being our own boss – It can be a never ending saga of

Accountability hey. Some days we get it right, other days are a complete right off making you question whether you are cut out for the entrepreneurial life.

If procrastination is something you struggle with (and unless you are the most self-motivated person on the planet) then these few gems may be the answer. Over the course of running our own businesses, we have learnt a thing or two about a thing or two. Through business coaching sessions, networking events and shared knowledge with our fellow co-workers we have picked up tips, tricks and daily rituals that put you on the path of productivity

We get it, we sound like Mum but completing one simple task each morning can put you on the right track for the day. US Admiral William H. McCraven, who spent 36 years as a Navy SEAL and was required to keep his room spic and span during his service, says in his 2014 commencement speech at the University of Texas that it’s extremely motivating for the day ahead.

“If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed”

How easy does that sound!? Self-discipline in every sense of the meaning can be difficult, but if you master a made bed over scrolling through your Instagram Feed the moment you wake, who knows what the rest of the day has in store.

It isn’t for everyone but the results in one’s mood and outlook on the day are too solid to ignore. Perhaps a moment of calm, reflection and breathing is just what the doctor ordered.

We went along to a Master Minds course held by David Dugan who spoke frequently about morning rituals and the power of meditation. Having a healthy scepticism yet open to the experience, we gave it a go! David Dugan took the attendees through a guided breathing exercise. Eyes closed, focussing on our breath for approximately 5 minutes.

The result; spiritual crack! We are hooked.

The increased oxygen to the brain is one thing, the level of calm and complete loss of stress and anxiety is incredible. Now if you’re a rookie meditator, fear not. We came across a super handy app called “Head Space” which takes you through guided breathing and meditation for all situations including anger, sleep and stress. How did we ever get by without smartphones?!

Give it a go!

Yes, we had to include it.

Get out of the home office and into a co-work space. We have done the living room office thing, it was good until it wasn’t and if you’re like us, working alongside other people who are getting through their to-dos can be incredibly motivating. After all, you don’t want to seem like the only person in the room not working (slacker!).

Taking your laptop away from the home office and into a shared and communal environment can be the shake up you need to propel you into the day. Whether you make the move to a Co-Work Space on a full time basis or simply bask in a Digital Nomad-esque lifestyle and Hot Desk once or twice a week, the change of scenery can be the inspiration you need to kick your daily goals.

Who else is obsessed with making lists?! (WE ARE!). In all seriousness, planning out your day by developing a schedule or to-do list can keep you on task and accountable. Something that most of us struggle with is time management so by creating your daily task list, prioritising them and checking them off one by one can not only be immensely satisfying but set a realistic standard for how long each task should take. This allows you to set goals, plan your calendar and get the most out of each day.

We have found that digital note pads on our PC desktop are the easiest way to record your actionable tasks. It’s right there in front of you, all day while you work reminding you of the sh*t you NEED to accomplish before the day is out.

*Disclaimer: Coffee is essential*

Do you drink enough water during the day? HELL NO, H2o!

Neither do we! Slamming down 5 tequila shots and a six pack is easy. Drinking 8 glasses of water throughout the day? Shut the front door.

We don’t need to sit here and educate you on the importance of keeping up your fluids. But what we can tell you is staying hydrated is important for feeling energised. A glass of water with a lemon wedge is our 2PM saviour. You know that time of the afternoon where you hit the proverbial wall and just want to crawl up in a ball and take a nap. Drinking a big glass of water will keep you from being dehydrated, and the tart flavour is a natural stimulus to make you more alert.

Implementing just one of these things into your daily work routine can be just the ticket to a more productive day. We do not claim to be the epitome of self-motivation but these simple and easy life hacks CAN keep you on track and on the road to success.

We would love to know what you do keep the wheels turning when the feeling of procrastination nears!

Let’s hear it!
